Health insurance in the Netherlands
In principle everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is automatically insured according to the Algemene Wet Bijzondere Ziektekosten (AWBZ, Exceptional Medical Expenses Act). By derivation, this means that everyone is also compulsorily insured according to the Zorgverzekeringswet (Zvw, Health Insurance Act), which means that he or she must take out health insurance.

The Exceptional Medical Expenses Act insures the – often long-term – high costs of treatment, support, nursing and personal care. The Health Insurance Act insures the costs of medically necessary care.
Health Care Insurance Board
The tasks of the Health Care Insurance Board (CVZ) include providing advice and implementing the Dutch statutory health insurance. CVZ has a major role in maintaining the quality, accessibility and affordability of health care in the Netherlands. CVZ’s advice is based not only or care-related considerations, but also considerations relating to finance and society.
