Bij de beoordeling van geneesmiddelen voor opname in het GVS ligt de nadruk op de therapeutische waarde en de doelmatigheid. Ook beoordeelt het CVZ geneesmiddelen voordat opname plaatsvindt in de 'beleidsregel dure geneesmiddelen' van de NZa. En ten slotte beoordeelt het CVZ op verzoek van zorgverzekeraars, zorgaanbieders en patiëntenverenigingen niet-geregistreerde indicaties van geneesmiddelen.
Bij de beoordeling van geneesmiddelen laat het CVZ zich bijstaan door de Commissie Farmaceutische Hulp, bestaande uit twintig externe deskundigen.
